Amino acid supplements provide an effective and useful blend of essential amino acids for our body. Athletes can especially benefit from supplementing amino acids because they aid in repair, growth, and development of muscle tissue. The body, through assimilation of amino acids, produces over 50,000 proteins and over 15,000 enzymes. Amino acids are not only responsible for the production of all the body's enzymes (including digestive enzymes), they also play a key role in normalizing moods, concentration, aggression, attention, and sleep.
Scientists, experts, and medical professionals all agree that getting enough amino acids in one's diet is an important factor in maintaining a good nutrition. It is a perfectly safe supplement to consume with no side-effects.
Among all the different amino acids, there are a few which are especially effective in aiding the body in recovery when undergoing an exercise program.
BCAA - Branched Chained Amino Acid
Branched Chained Amino Acids is composed of three essential aminos, namely leucine, isoleucine, and valine. They are blends of amino acids that play important roles in protein synthesis and energy production. They are among the most effective supplements not to be left out in any sports nutrition plan. In short, BCAAs can help in boosting your immune function, aid in protein synthesis, stimulate fat loss, prevent muscle tissues from breaking down, increase recovery and improve endurance.
L-Gluatamine
L-glutamine is highly demanded in our body. It is used in our guts and immune systems extensively to maintain optimal performance. 60% of free-form amino acids floating in skeletal muscles is L-glutamine. L-glutamine plays a very important role in protein metabolism, and it appears to be a very important nutrient for body builders. When supplemented, it helps in reducing the breaking down of muscle tissues by preventing the glutamine stored in muscle cells from depleting when other tissues are in need of it.
The combination of glutamine and BCAA's has been clinically shown to dramatically improve nitrogen balance and slow down muscle wasting in bone marrow patients, burn patients, and those undergoing major surgery. Amongst athletes a relatively low dosage of BCAA (3 grams) and glutamine (5 grams) supplemented during training was found to promote about a kilogram greater gains in muscle mass and greater gains in strength versus ingesting whey protein alone. Anecdotal reports indicate some athletes making gains of up to 5 times this number by using optimal (higher) dosages with solid nutrition and training! Although BCAA's and glutamine definitely have plenty of merit as stand alone supplements, the potential benefits when used in combination seem to magnify the results.
