The fitness industry is booming in Singapore and there are more and more people looking to hire personal trainers
to help them achieve their fitness goals. With increased demand comes increased supply. The number of personal trainers have increased dramatically over the past years. How do you find the ONE suitable personal trainer who will eventually become your coach, motivator and friend? Here are some tips (not in order of importance):
Even though I believe that practical knowledge is much more important than pieces of paper, i think that a basic certification is still required for any trainer who wants to take the job seriously. There's quite a few certifications available here. Examples include NCSF, NSCA, ACSM, ACE etc. Specialized certifications can be quite useful too. Eg. Specialist in Sports Nutrition.
Some personal trainers may even have diplomas or degrees in sports science. I’m not saying that they are the most knowledgeable, but these are people who should be quite serious about what they do.
2) Coaching Skills
He can do it effortlessly, but can he teach you how to do it properly? A good personal trainer has to have a keen awareness of body positioning and movement of the human body. Also notice if he even pays attention to what you’re doing! Too many trainers I see play with their phones or day dream while training their clients. That’s a big no-no.
Your time is precious and you don’t deserve to wait for your personal trainer. Punctuality is important to me as I guess it is for you. Look out for this in your personal trainer. Often cancellations or worse, no shows, can really be demotivational and disrupt the whole training program. Get your personal trainer to keep these to the minimum.
4) Knowledge, Technical Know How & Efficiency
Choose only someone who can get you the best results in the shortest time possible, while keeping it safe. Then you are not wasting time and money.
Personal training is as the name suggests - personal. Get someone you are comfortable with to make the process enjoyable and something you can put yourself through in the long run.
Now go hunt for the RIGHT personal trainer and start getting some kick ass results!
