Personal Training in Singapore FAQ

Personal trainer and their trainee

Thinking of hiring a personal trainer but have your doubts? Let us help answer some common questions customers have in Singapore.

1. Is it worth paying for a personal trainer?

The short answer is yes (if you manage to find a good personal trainer). The longer answer is still a yes, but please let me explain why. A few factors come into play here.

Knowledge – a fine personal trainer is a wealth of knowledge. You can gather this knowledge yourself, through books, YouTube videos or courses but more often than not, it’s really hard to tell good advice from bad ones. A personal trainer foundational knowledge is more capable of retaining good advice and discarding the rest. To acquire this skill will require too much time for someone not in the fitness industry.

Personalisation – even if you manage to gather good information online or through books, they are generally generic and if you have a different body type or are in a different situation (with differing health conditions or goals), it’s recommended that you seek help from an experienced personal trainer. By possibly handling clients similar to you in the past, they are able to give better personalized advice than those on the internet.

Safety – by having someone skilled and experienced watch over your training drastically reduces your chances of injury. A personal trainer can help you correct your posture, form and technique during training to enhance the training effect while preventing musculoskeletal injuries. Having a capable spotter at hand during training is also crucial for safety, especially if you’re strong and use heavy weights.

Motivation – it’s boring for most people to train alone. Unless you’re lucky enough to find a training buddy who has good knowledge with similar goals to you and can fit into your schedule, you’re better off hiring a personal trainer. We are masters of motivation, using different styles of motivation to push you past your limits and more so you get the best results.

Accountability – having someone who is on top of your training goals is a wonderful feeling. A personal trainer will keep you on track and help you achieve your goals before the deadline is reached. When you are accountable to someone else when it comes to dieting and training, results are massively improved. And nothing can keep you more accountable than paying for a big expensive personal training package!

2. How much do personal trainers charge in Singapore?

Personal training rates in Singapore have a wide range. You have inexperienced, non-certified ‘personal trainers’ charging $20 an hour on Carousell. With more experience and certification, many freelance or part time trainers trying to supplement their income might charge $40-70 an hour. They might do house calls or train out of a less than premium gym. The average rate of personal training here, with most full time, professional personal trainers, might range from $90-120 an hour. Then when personal training is held in a posh, high end gym with top class facilities and equipment, located in a prime area with high rentals, personal trainers might charge $150 or more per session. Many times, external factors other than skill and ability dictate how much a personal trainer will charge. Always do a session and gauge your comfort level before committing to a package!

3. What does a personal trainer do for you?

Programming – both in the gym and on your own. It will be a program tailor made for your unique body as well as goals. This is done after doing proper goal setting as well as assessments done. A good program is essential for you to get to your goals without risking injuries.

Diet planning – it is the responsibility of your personal trainer to write you a diet plan. Without it, results will simply not be optimal. Again, this is done through proper assessments, understanding more about your lifestyle, eating habits and food preferences. A good plan will be effective, safe but yet sustainable for the long run. When you hit a plateau, tweaks should be made to the plan to ensure continued results.

Lifestyle modification – a good personal trainer will also look at your different lifestyle habits such as alcohol consumption, stress relief methods, sleep etc and make changes so you get optimal results when it comes to improving your health, physique or even energy levels. It is truly a holistic approach that personal trainers will use.
